Archbishop Foley Beach’s Pentecostal Letter

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

Greetings to you in the name of God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!

In my final letter to the Province, Alison and I are deeply grateful for your prayers, encouragement and ministry over the past decade in the name of Christ Jesus. We sincerely want to say thank you; I can’t believe how quickly our time flies in this office.

As we enter this Pentecost season, celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and conclude my term as Archbishop of the Episcopal Church in North America this June, I want to direct our hearts and minds to the billions of people on earth who have not yet had a relationship with Jesus People who build relationships. As members of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, we are not only commissioned by Christ, but we are empowered by His own Holy Spirit to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth!

In Matthew 5:13-14, Jesus told his disciples that they were the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” We are sent into this dark world to bring His saving gospel message to a lost, hurting, and corrupt generation, but how can we do this effectively in a practical way? Over the past decade of my leadership, I have championed the good work of five key initiatives that help us as Anglicans be salt and light in America and around the world. These initiatives are: Global Mission Initiative (GMI), Forever Forward, Matthew 25, Every Tribe and Nation Initiative, and the Next Generation Leadership Initiative. It is my sincere hope that every member of the Episcopal Church in North America will embody these missional priorities.

As we elect our third Archbishop, we are entering a transition in leadership, but not a transition in mission and purpose. First, Jesus gave us His Great Commission to make disciples, and we cannot change this command at will. He then sends the Holy Spirit to enable His followers to carry out His mission on earth. Pentecost is an extremely powerful time of transition because Jesus gives birth to the Church and gives instructions on how to carry out His mission until everyone hears it!

I call for fasting and prayer as we choose our next Archbishop. We welcome prayers for the next transition of the Episcopal Church in North America and our place in the global Anglican Communion. I would now like to appeal for generous donations to support the work of these five faithful initiatives, not only to finish my term with force, but also to strengthen global missions, church planting, justice and mercy, multicultural inclusion and as we move toward God for us together Develop godly leaders in the arranged future tense.

We need to raise $77,000 by June 30 to end our fiscal year strong and support our ongoing initiatives with a leadership transition. As God pours out His Spirit upon us again at Pentecost, may He also release a generous spirit to fan the flames of missions and outreach so that we can be the salt and light He has called us to be.

Now, Heavenly Father, please send us to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you faithfully
Witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Him, to you, to the Holy Spirit be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
