St. Pete startup enters partnership agreement with Rowdies • St. Pete Catalyst


Spontivly’s co-founders announced Tuesday that Tampa Bay Rowdies will now leverage the St. Petersburg-based tech startup’s innovative market data analytics platform, accomplishing several goals.

Marissa Huggins and Anthony Nagendraraj moved the company to St. Petersburg in 2022 from Alberta, Canada.

The announcement highlights the local startup’s progress in the lucrative professional sports industry. Spontivly has been working with the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Dallas Mavericks since receiving an investment from team owner Mark Cuban, and counts South Asia Hockey Network Apna Hockey as a client.

Spontivly’s code-free dashboard will provide team officials with easy-to-understand corporate sponsorship insights. The startup’s software integrates fan engagement data from multiple sources, including Tickets.com, LinkedIn and SalesLoft.

Huggins said the platform will show which social media posts generated the most views. It will also quantify community sentiment.

Huggins explained that sports data software typically focuses on point-of-sale and customer follow-up. “Our tools really focus on every moment leading up to the sale,” she said.

“We try to give people a 360-degree view of how customers interact with you before they make a sale.”

The Rowdies were Tampa Bay’s first professional sports team to compete in the USL Championship. Huggins said the team’s partnership has generated interest around the league.

Spontivly is currently in “early discussions” with an unnamed professional league regarding a national agreement. Huggins added: “We’re actually taking it to the next level not just as a team.”

Rowdies President Ryan Helfrick said in a statement Tuesday that Spontivly’s platform will demonstrate the “true value and impact” of sponsorships. He also stressed the importance of local partnerships.

The Rowdies share ownership with the Tampa Bay Rays. Huggins said that while ensuring a successful promotion with St. Petersburg’s football team is a “top priority,” partnering with the city’s baseball team “is definitely an opportunity that we’re both open to — especially with the new stadium and everything.”

The Rays hope to transform Tropicana Field and its sprawling parking lot into a vibrant mixed-use district anchored by a new $1.3 billion ballpark. Huggins noted that community feedback is critical to the 30-year plan. “If the opportunity arises, we’ll be open to it, but I don’t have anything to say yet,” she said.

Huggins said Spontivly is preparing to launch a Series A round of financing. She believes the early partnership will lead to future success and says the startup has been scaling up since moving to St. Petersburg.

Appearing on ABC in June 2022 Shark Tank Spontivly received a six-figure investment from Cuban. The startup also closed an oversubscribed $2 million seed round.

Huggins said Spontivly will “definitely” expand. However, she also pointed out that the current team is “definitely weak.”

“No matter what, our headquarters will be in St. Peter … and we will fly people out,” Huggins added. “We take them on a tour of the city; we show them the places that support us so much. We really make sure they get the full experience.

She sees working with Rowdies as a way to give back to the community and help ease the challenges of international relocation. Huggins said this shows that the city, already a “giant in technology,” is now entering the world of sports analytics, artificial intelligence and big data.
