This month’s cover artist, Dizzy Ink’s Craig Proud, talks us through his work and inspirations

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

Mr. Ink, The King of Prints, Paper Daddy…just kidding, it’s just Craig Pride. I’m lucky enough to run creative print studio Dizzy Ink, as well as run the Notts Magazine Festival each year and run the Notts Magazine Library.

What was the inspiration behind the cover?

The cover inspiration combines different elements from the Notts Zine Fest poster, Notts Zine Library clips, and other amazing artwork from the Dizzy Ink project. We are very grateful to the talent behind Zine Fest and the library posters – some wonderful artists have contributed over the years. This is a collage created by Ben Wood (, Kim Thompson (@kim_a_tron), Dylan Woodall (@deedoubleyoo_), Maria Bacila, Jacob Tomlinson (@jacob.illustration), Alex McDougall (@Alex.j .mcdougall) composed and myself!

How does it compare to other projects you’ve worked on?

Looking back at the art work from hosting magazine related events/experiences/workshops over the years, it was great to create an image that represented this.

What was the biggest challenge you faced while creating this piece?

Time remains the same! We are always thankfully busy with projects! We are so buuuuuuuuuuusy! Additionally, it can be difficult to collage so many different styles and elements together – they are all powerful in their own right, so putting them all together can be difficult because they all want to clash.

Tell us about some of the projects you’ve worked on in the past…

This is the third Zuoshi cover I’ve designed!

What are your plans for the future?

Well, the second cover I designed was supposed to be in April 2020 to celebrate our fifth birthday, but for obvious reasons, this one was put on hold. This is about a self-directed project that I’ve been designing around a fruit sticker design, so it had to actually print out to reflect the physical nature of the sticker. We parked it and will be doing it in April 2025 for ten years into our business – how crazy!

Is there anything else you would like to tell LeftLion readers?

Magazines are great, they are personal publications direct from the makers. These creators are extremely talented at writing, drawing, designing, and publishing content on niche topics that are often overlooked by mainstream media. Magazines are a powerful statement and honestly a joy to experience. If you want to keep up with zines happening around the city, follow @nottszinefest @nottszinelibrary on Instagram!
