Orbital Marine signs tidal energy preferred supplier agreement with GEG


Orbital Marine Power, a developer of floating tidal turbine technology, has selected Global Energy Group (GEG) as its preferred supplier for the manufacture and assembly of tidal turbines for a project in Scotland’s Orkney Islands.

Turbine production is expected to begin at GEG’s Port Nigg facility in Cromarty Firth later this year, with the Orkney Islands interconnection scheme expected to generate first electricity in 2026.

These projects have been awarded contracts in Rounds 4 and 5 of the UK Government’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) auctions.



The projects will build on the success of Orbital O2, the world’s most powerful tidal turbine. The scheme, located off the coast of Orkney, will be up and running in 2021 and will reduce CO2 emissions by around 2,000 tonnes per year, powering 1,700 UK homes, while creating high-value jobs for the local economy over its operating life.

In line with the company’s vision to use a predominantly UK-based supply chain to manufacture and install its tidal projects, Orbital expects to contribute to UK job creation through the delivery of its CFD projects.
