Lyday, Couch sign college football concession deal

Durant football senior stalwarts Braylon Liday and Clay Couch recently signed to continue their careers at the collegiate level after serving as starters for many years in many different areas with the Lions.

Leddy signed a letter to play for Southeastern Oklahoma State University, while Couch is headed to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M University in Miami.

It was the culmination of both men’s high school careers, helping Durant post his best grid finish in eight years last fall.

Lyday was named District 5A-4 Kicker of the Year, while Couch earned second-team all-district honors on the defensive line.

“It’s been accomplished through hard work, a lot of effort and a lot of different things to get these young men to where they are now,” DHS head coach Todd Vargas said. “Track and field is about getting there. The means, not the end of the means. Now this will lead them to what will happen for the rest of their lives, where they will one day meet their wives, start a family and get a job.

“This is a great achievement for two young men who deserve it.”

Liddy has served the Lions in many different roles throughout his career. As a senior, he rushed 23 times for 82 yards, averaging 3.6 yards per carry. He also caught 12 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown and gained 11.4 yards per catch. Defensively, as the anchor of the secondary, he made 23 tackles and intercepted three passes. He broke up three passes, recovered a fumble and a tackle that resulted in a loss.

The senior also showed off his legs on kickoffs and converted five of eight field goal attempts, including a career-best 48-yarder in the season finale against Del City.

“It feels really good to have this opportunity,” Leddy commented. “I’m very lucky, especially after working as hard as we do day in and day out. I can stay close to home and still be with my family while continuing to play.

Couch also performed a lot on Durant’s offensive line. He became the mainstay of the defensive front, completing 38 tackles, including 3 tackles and 1 sack.

“It feels great to be able to sign this document and have the opportunity to play college football,” Couch said. “I’m very happy and ready to go. It’s a great opportunity, a chance to play at the next level and I’m very excited about it.
