Quad leads the way in environmental responsibility

For Quad, sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a guiding principle woven into its fabric.
As executive director of environmental health and safety Natalie Hahlen explained in the company’s latest environmental, social and governance report: “We continue to prove that what’s good for the environment is good for business. We’ll never settle for ‘good enough’ , we remain committed to finding new ways to conserve raw materials, reduce waste and litter, reuse, recycle and source materials responsibly to minimize environmental impact.

Sustainability initiatives run throughout Quad’s departments and power its manufacturing solutions. In 2022, 79% of the paper purchased by Quad received third-party certification from organizations such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). To limit the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes, Quad recycles more than 98% of solid waste at its U.S. facilities.

In April, the company made a five-year commitment to participate in We Energies’ Renewable Energy Pathway program, which will provide enough renewable energy to offset more than 50% of the electricity use at its Franklin, Wisconsin, facility. of U.S. packaging manufacturing takes place.

Quad also integrates sustainability into its products and solutions for the market. These sustainable practices are critical to developing relationships with brands that are also committed to creating better ways for their local communities and environment.

Quad In-Store has implemented a “redesign, reduce and reuse” sustainability strategy to guide its operations, resulting in innovations such as the LAMà Band, a proprietary and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bag packaging. The solution not only reduces waste but also simplifies the packaging assembly process for retailers.

The company estimates that this innovation will eliminate the following waste annually:
• 330,000 plastic bags
• 330,000 disposable paper instructions
• 660 ream packaging
• 66 corrugated boxes
• 132 plastic tapes
• 8 wooden pallets

A California retailer partnered with Quad to find new sustainable marketing methods, reusing bases for its in-store displays in more than 600 locations. The collaboration successfully reused 1,308 plastic bases across different events, significantly reducing the use of plastic and the environmental impact of transportation.
