A recent study found that Arizonans are among the most likely in the country to regret getting a tattoo.

The study, published by European tattoo studio LLTatoo, analyzed where in the United States people are more likely to regret getting a tattoo.

The tattoo company analyzed the number of Google searches related to tattoo removal or covering services, including “laser tattoo removal” and “tattoo covering ideas.” The number of searches in each state was then compared to population density. Experts then determined the average monthly search volume per 100,000 citizens.

Colorado tops the list with an average of about 121.87 searches per month. Research shows that there are more than 650 tattoo studios in the state, and tattoo culture is becoming increasingly popular.

LLTattoo spokesman Mentor Dedaj said it’s important to think carefully before deciding to get a tattoo, and he advised against making spontaneous decisions.

“Tattoos often represent deeply personal stories, passions or experiences. However, when the initial excitement wears off, some people begin to regret their tattoos, especially if the decision was spontaneous,” Dedaj said. “Tattoo removal remains an expensive and sometimes painful process. The tattoos themselves are expensive and painful.

After all, tastes change, trends change, and attitudes change. It’s a natural part of being human, and we can usually adjust our lifestyle and fashion choices accordingly – but with permanent body ink, this may not be so easy.

So, here’s a list of the states where you’re most likely to get a regretful tattoo, along with some tips to help you avoid it.

8 things to consider before getting a tattoo

According to the Beautiful Canadian Laser and Skin Clinic, here are some tips to avoid getting a tattoo you regret long-term.

  • Avoid simplified symbols, hieroglyphs, and logos: According to the clinic, clients seeking tattoo removal often receive markings with symbols and hieroglyphs they do not understand, or that relate to a lifestyle they no longer identify with.
  • Think twice about cultural tattoos and tattoos in a language you don’t speak: Beautiful Canada Clinic advises caution about cultural appropriation and controversial depictions. Some trends may have subtle meanings and may offend certain groups of people. Therefore, the clinic advises against getting a tattoo just for the sake of a trend.
  • Say no to your lover’s name on a tattoo: The reality of many relationships is that they end. The clinic advises against having your partner’s name etched on your body.
  • Choose your tattoo location carefully: While perceptions of tattoos have changed, Beautiful Canadians says the way you display them can affect how people, including employers, view you.
  • Studying the aftereffects of ink color and fading trends: According to Beautiful Canadians, the quality of a tattoo can vary depending on the depth of the ink and pigments used, and there is minimal industry regulation. Tattoo artists may be unaware of certain pigments, including those that may cause cancer. Therefore, the clinic recommends researching ink safety and considering ease of removal, especially for darker tattoos or less traditional colors, as they may be more difficult and expensive to remove.
  • Choose an excellent tattoo artist with superb skills and stable techniques: Sometimes tattoo artists, especially amateur tattoo artists, don’t draw the tattoo you want. Since tattoos are permanent, unsightly tattoos can be unbearable, and repairing them can be costly and difficult to achieve.
  • Choose a hygienic tattoo parlor and consider your health history: Tattooing involves deep penetration of the skin, which can result in wounds that can easily become infected if proper hygiene is not followed. People with poor healing or a tendency for scarring should be cautious. Despite best practices, adverse reactions can occur, in which case people may need to undergo laser ablation. In extreme cases, unhygienic conditions can lead to infections such as HIV or hepatitis.
  • If you’re planning to get a tattoo, think twice before you do it: While not all tattoo procedures are inherently risky, data shows regret is common, reflecting the growing demand for tattoo removal services.
