Carbondale, IL – Southern Illinois Men’s Basketball Coach Scott Nagy SIU made his fourth signing of the offseason on Wednesday Damian Mayo Jr. Saluki family.Mayo officially joins the striker Jashin Weber and Rawlings Aligbe and guard Drew Steff Nagy’s initial recruiting class.

“We’re excited to get Damien because he’s going to provide leadership and he obviously understands the league very well,” Nagy said. “What we’re most excited about is his toughness, his leadership and the experience he’s going to bring to the table Something to offer us.”

Mayo Jr. spent his first two seasons at Missouri State University, appearing in 60 games, starting 38 games for the Bears. Last year, the 6-foot-3 guard started 21 games and averaged 5.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1 assist per game. He scored a season-high 13 points against Sam Houston and scored in double figures in seven games, including two of the final four games of the season. In the win over UIC, he had 10 points and 11 rebounds, the first double-double of his career.

The St. Louis native made 17 starts and appeared in 31 games as a true freshman with the Bears in 2022-23. He scored in double figures three times and scored a season-high 13 points in the MVC tournament win over UIC.

Mayo Jr. was a class standout for the Bears and was named MVC Scholar-Athlete Team Honorable Mention during his sophomore season with a 3.58 accounting GPA. He was also named to the MVC Honor Roll and the MSU Athletic Directors Honor Roll.

Mayo Jr., a three-star overall recruit and a three-star point guard on the opposing team, spent the 2021-22 season at Link Year Prep in Branson, Missouri. Was a key figure for St. Louis Chaminade Prep coach Frank Bennett, leading the team to a 21-2 record in the 2020-21 season.

He ended his junior year with district and conference championships and a Class VI state playoff appearance. In the 2020-21 season, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game at Chaminade Stadium. In the game against Vianney, he made 13 of 18 shots and scored 4 three-pointers. Next season’s high of 32 points.
