Sign agreement to improve energy resilience

ILOILO CITY: SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime) and Iloilo City’s electricity distribution company MORE Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power) have signed an agreement to help mitigate energy during power outages Insufficient supply problem.

On April 30, the two companies signed an agreement under the Interruptible Load Program (ILP) to address the country’s pressing energy crisis.

“protocol […] “We are poised to make significant progress in easing pressure on the Visayas power grid, which has been stuck in yellow and red alert status due to insufficient energy reserves,” MORE Power said in a statement.

The ILP was established by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to address energy supply shortfalls until additional capacity is provided by the grid.

According to the DOE and ERC, companies with backup generation capacity such as SM Prime will be compensated for using their own generation facilities during energy shortages.

The Visayas power grid has recently experienced ongoing red and yellow alert status, primarily due to forced power outages at power plants and capacity reductions intensified by the dry season and El Niño.

When the power supply is insufficient to meet user demand and the regulation requirements of the transmission grid, a red alert will be issued; when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the emergency requirements of the transmission grid, a yellow alert will be issued.

Engineer Teodoro Bautista, vice president of SM Engineering and Development Operations, mentioned the importance of companies working with utilities and government agencies to ensure stable energy supplies during the crisis.

“SM Prime’s commitment to ILP underscores its unwavering dedication to corporate responsibility and national well-being. By actively participating in initiatives aimed at enhancing energy resilience, we hope to encourage other businesses to join these important efforts,” he added.

Meanwhile, Roel Castro, President and CEO of MORE Power, echoed these sentiments, underscoring their commitment to supporting the nation’s energy resiliency.

MORE Power said: “The ILP is a beacon of collaboration between the private and public sectors to address energy scarcity.”

“By voluntarily reducing electricity consumption during peak hours or when grid stability is threatened, players like SM Prime play a key role in stabilizing energy supplies and avoiding potential blackouts,” it added.
