Tata and Hygenco sign deal for green ammonia and green hydrogen inks

Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited (TSSEZL) and HHP Five Private Limited (Hygenco) on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a green industrial park at Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP) of TSSEZL in Ganjam district of Odisha Hydrogen and green ammonia projects.

Under the agreement, Hygenco will acquire land in Ganjam district to set up its green hydrogen, green ammonia and derivatives units.

Hygenco, known for producing low-cost green hydrogen, aims to produce 1 million tonnes per year (1MnTPA) from the plant in phases, with the first phase scheduled to be operational by December 2026.

TSSEZL Managing Director Manikanta Naik expressed satisfaction with the onboarding of Hygenco and noted that the industrial park’s total committed capacity for green hydrogen and green ammonia manufacturing is currently around 2.6 MnTPA, reinforcing its position as India’s green hydrogen and ammonia hub.

Amit Bansal, founder and CEO of Hygenco, highlighted their goal of producing the lowest-cost green ammonia for customers and their strategic vision to become a global dominant player in the industry.

The green ammonia produced will be exported through the existing Gopalpur port facility, and utility corridors currently being developed are expected to enhance the project’s logistics and pipeline connectivity.

Hygenco has secured several long-term offtake deals for green hydrogen in India, including the country’s first megawatt-scale plant in Hisar, Haryana.

TSSEZL had previously signed similar agreements with other manufacturers to set up a 1.6 MnTPA green hydrogen and ammonia project at Gopalpur Industrial Park
