Statement from the Diocese of Leicester on the union agreement with Unite


Following the union’s recommendation, the Council of Bishops approved a voluntary union recognition agreement, making the diocese the first in the country to do so.

The agreement means the Diocese recognizes the importance of union representation for healthy employment relationships; the union’s responsibility to represent the interests of its members; and the importance of good practice in employment and holding public office. It also commits dioceses to consult with trade unions on issues of interest to clergy and staff in their employment or (in the case of public servants) participation (such as wages, health and safety and equal opportunities) and to further develop the welfare of clergy, Staff and applicant diversity, equity and inclusion and anti-harassment policies and procedures.

The Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow, said: “I hope this agreement reflects the close collaboration we have had as a diocese with CEECA in recent years and our commitment to supporting clergy, empowering lay ministers and staff wellbeing Promise of”.

The agreement covers all clergy holding an episcopal license to minister in the diocese, as well as all staff employed directly by the episcopal office, the cathedral or the DBF. Employees of Parish Church Councils (PCCs) do not fall within the scope of this agreement as each PCC is an independent charity in its own right.

The agreement does not bind any employee or clergy member to become a union member, nor does it prevent those who may already be members of other unions from calling on their own union representatives to represent them in any future human resources processes.
