Scientists use bioink for 3D printing

Currently, scientists are harnessing the power of cells and 3D printing to design biomaterials. Ziyi Yu, Zhengao Di and their colleagues created a “bioink” containing plant cells. They then injected the bioink into the snowflake shape, which began to grow as the cells grew, repaired and responded to their environment. This engineering ink works too.

“Engineered plant active materials”, also known as EPLM, is a new field combining synthetic biology and 3D printing. This invention has inspired many improvements to the mechanism itself, as well as its possible applications (such as affordable housing) of many ideas.
