UnionPay signed an agreement with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to benefit tourists

On April 30, card payment giant China UnionPay signed a preliminary agreement with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to strengthen cooperation and promote high-quality travel experiences for Chinese tourists in Thailand.

The letter of intent (LoI) between TAT and UnionPay International, a subsidiary of China UnionPay, is valid for two years. The scope of cooperation under the agreement includes co-financing joint marketing programs, joint promotions and press releases, data sharing and high-end accounts.

The agreement is expected to help incentivize Chinese tourists and UnionPay cardholders to travel to Thailand while gaining a deeper understanding of their spending and spending behaviour.

Launch dedicated marketing and outreach campaigns targeting UnionPay’s high-end customer base (including platinum or diamond card holders and above or high-income customers) to encourage tourists to visit Thailand and stimulate higher spending.

“This agreement supports the Thai government’s tourism policy and establishes long-term strategic partnerships with leading companies in key tourism markets,” said Thapanee Kiatphaibool, director-general of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Statistics from the Tourism Authority of Thailand show that as of April 21 this year, the number of Chinese tourists traveling to Thailand exceeded 2 million, making it Thailand’s largest tourism market.

Starting from March, holders of valid Thai ordinary passports and valid Chinese official passports and ordinary passports will be exempted from visas when entering, exiting or transiting the other country’s territory and staying for 30 days.

Tapani said: “Following the visa-free policy for Chinese tourists, further strengthening cooperation with Chinese counterparts will help facilitate travel and develop and promote high-quality tourism experiences in Thailand for Chinese tourists.”
