Two Buccaneers sign NFL free agent deals

Greenville, North Carolina – Two former East Carolina University football players serve as wide receivers Jaylen Johnson (San Diego Chargers) and safety Julius Wood (Dallas Cowboys) has signed a free agent contract with every NFL organization.

Johnson’s career notes: Four-time honoree (2 East Carolina, 2 Georgia)…Played in 48 career games (22/East Carolina, 26/Georgia)…Caught 76 career passes, advanced 855 yards (11.3 years)…scored 6 touchdowns – all at East Carolina…totaled 843 all-purpose yards (6 rushes, 855 rcv, -18 kOR).

Johnson’s 2023 season: Started 11 of 12 games in final year with program…Recorded 627 snaps (594 offensive, 33 special teams)…Caught 45 passes for 466 yards (10.4 years) at Buccaneers passing game 2nd among ball receivers…scored two touchdowns (UTSA, Tulsa) ) Bundle Sean Calhoun Leads the team…caught a season-high eight passes for a career-best 105 yards at UTSA…had at least two catches in all 12 games…targeted 80 times for the year , completed 45 receptions (56.3%)…Leading team in yards after the catch with 268…Caught four or more passes five times in a game…Seven times in a game catches for over 30 yards… Longest career catch this season came from Appalachian State (39 yards)… Ranked No. 4 – Preseason All-AAC selection Athlon Sports …Preseason first-team honorable mention college football network (WR/PR) … Named to the East-West Shrine Bowl preseason watch list.

Wood’s career notes: The Buccaneers’ three-year player of the year…played in 37 career games, 24 starts – all consecutive, to finish his career…booked for 189 tackles (82 solo)… Leads team in tackles for back-to-back seasons (87 in 2022, 86 in 2023) … Totaled 5.5 TFL (-8 yards) …. Intercepted four passes in Memphis (2 in 2022 times, 2 in 2023), returned one touchdown pass…forced a fumble 3 times in his career…had 8 pass breakups…had at least 1 tackle in 33 of 37 career games (29+ times).
