Miners move to NFL: Dolphins sign Hardison & Meyer, Patriots sign Henry

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) – UTEP football’s Gavin Hardison, Zuri Henry and Andrew Meyer Saturday afternoon Terms have been reached on a free-agent deal with a National Football League team.

Hardison, a 6-foot-1, 206-pound quarterback, and Meyer, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound center, came to the Miami Dolphins in trades. Henry, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound offensive tackle, signed with the New England Patriots.

Hardison started the first five games of 2023 before being sidelined by injury. Hardison threw for 947 yards and five touchdowns. He scored two touchdowns in UTEP’s win over UIW. In 2022, Hardison started the first 10 games and completed 164 of 315 passes for 2,044 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions. 2021 was his most successful season, leading the Miners to seven wins in the New Mexico Bowl. He passed for 3,217 yards and 18 touchdowns in 13 games he started. The Hobbs, N.M., product is the first UTEP quarterback to pass for more than 3,000 yards since the 2009 season.

Hardison finished his UTEP career with 7,963 passing yards, 1,061 pass attempts and 570 completions. He ranks third in all three categories on the program’s top 10 list. Trevor Vittatoe (12,439 yards/1,641 attempts/914 completions) and Jordan Palmer (11,084 yards/1,427 attempts/851 completions) rank first. 1 and 2 in each category. Hardison’s 40 career touchdown passes rank fourth on the program’s top 10 list while ranking sixth with 43 touchdowns. Hardison has played in 38 career games at center, starting 35 of them.

Meyer started all 12 games in 2023 at center.

Henry started 11 of 11 games in 2023.

The efforts of Meyer and Henry in 2021 helped the Miners to their first winning season in seven seasons and a bowl berth.

UTEP’s two offensive linemen have helped a rushing attack average more than 159 yards per game (1,439 yards) and 12 rushing touchdowns. Their combined efforts helped UTEP’s two running backs, Hankins (812 rushing yards) and Burgess Jr. (620 yards), rank among the top seven on the CUSA rushing list after the regular season. UTEP rushed for over 200 yards in three games, including a season-high 329 yards in a 28-14 win over UIW. The Miners rushed for 224 yards against Los Angeles Tech and 222 yards in a comeback win over Sam Houston. The Miners also paid off with three rushing attempts in a 37-34 win over the Bearkats.

In total, five Miners were drafted or signed as free agents. Tyrice Knight was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks, while Elijah Klein was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier in the day.
