Hawks re-sign AJ Brown with $84 million guaranteed

  • AJ Brown signed a 3-year contract extension worth $96 million, becoming the WR with the highest guaranteed money and average annual value.
  • Brown’s performance on the field justifies the contract, as he’s had a record-breaking run since joining the Eagles.
  • The Eagles prioritized their wide receivers, offering Brown and DeVonta Smith lucrative contract extensions to ensure future success.

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman caused quite a stir at the NFL Draft last night when he announced a contract extension with wide receiver AJ Brown.

The contract was extended for three years with a contract value of US$96 million, of which US$84 million is a guaranteed contract. The massive deal now makes Brown the highest-paid wide receiver based on guaranteed money and average annual value of the contract.

With Brown’s new contract, he surpassed the Detroit Lions’ Amon-La-St. Brown to become the highest-paid wide receiver in both categories and now ranks fifth by total value behind Davante Adams, St. Brown with Tyreek Hill and Amari Cooper.

Looking at average annual value alone, Brown’s annual income is a full $2 million more than St. Brown’s, with a guaranteed $7 million more.

The Eagles acquired the 18th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft via a trade with the Tennessee Titans. Upon arriving in Philadelphia, Brown appeared to be a perfect fit for the big, tough receiver role. In his first game as an Eagle, he set the franchise record for most receiving yards in a player’s debut, finishing with 10 catches and 155 yards against the Lions in Week 1.

Since then, he has been a vital part of the Eagles offense and made the team better. He was so good that he earned second-team All-Pro honors as well as Pro Bowl honors in each of Brown’s two seasons in Philadelphia. Brown’s value on the court is consistent with the contract extension he agreed to with the Eagles on Thursday.

Before news of Brown’s contract extension broke, earlier this month, teammate DeVonta Smith signed a three-year contract extension worth $75 million, of which $51 million is guaranteed. The Eagles have made it clear that they value the wide receiver tandem of Brown and Smith and that they prioritize taking care of players financially.

They’ll have these two receivers as weapons for Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts for the foreseeable future as they continue their push to get back to the Super Bowl. The upcoming season will be a big one for the team, with Nick Sirianni in trouble following last year’s disastrous end to the season.

With a new coordinator and a pair of star receivers signed heading into the season, it will be interesting to see where the Eagles fare in 2024.
