Philippines, Qatar sign agreement to strengthen tourism ties Salaam Gateway


The Philippines and Qatar signed a preliminary agreement on Monday to promote the growth of bilateral tourism and business activities.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) is one of the agreements signed during the state visit of Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to the Southeast Asian country.

“We are reintroducing the Philippines to the world with its culture, heritage and identity, and we consider our partnership with Qatar to be an important part of this movement,” Philippine Tourism Secretary Cristina Frasco was quoted as saying by the Philippine News Agency. .

The agreement is expected to solidify the two countries’ goals of encouraging tourism investment, facilitating familiarization visits for media and tourism experts, and improving the skills of operators, employees and experts.

According to data released by the Department of Tourism, the Philippines received 10,438 tourists from Qatar in 2023.

The Philippine Tourism Department is committed to strengthening Muslim-friendly and halal tourism products to meet the needs of Muslim tourists.

The country announced plans to launch a national halal strategy in September last year, aiming to generate P230 billion in investment and help create 120,000 jobs within five years. In addition to food and food-related products, the initiative also includes verticals such as Islamic finance, halal-friendly travel and tourism.

The Philippines was named an emerging Muslim-friendly destination at the 2023 Halal Tourism Global Summit.
