Amazon will launch a new generation of Kindle with color ACeP technology in 2025

According to TechNews reports, Amazon is preparing to launch ACeP (Advanced Color Electronic Paper) technology next year to completely change the Kindle e-reader series. This was revealed by Tianfeng International Securities analyst Guo Mingchi, which means that this is not something that can be easily shaken off. As we all know, Terry Gou’s predictions are very accurate and he is highly respected in the technology community.

Kuo predicts that Amazon will launch 6-inch and 10-inch color Kindle e-readers equipped with E Ink ACeP technology. The new range of color e-readers is expected to be available in 2025. This enhances saturation and contrast. In addition, ACeP uses an oxide backplane to ensure superior reactivity.

That said, with all the cutting-edge features that ACeP display technology represents, it comes at a premium price compared to E Ink Kaleido or monochrome e-paper. This suggests that Kindle devices with ACeP displays will cost significantly more than current models, with Kuo predicting they will be 40 to 60 percent more expensive than monochrome e-paper.

In fact, the global color e-reader market is expected to grow significantly in 2024, accounting for 8% to 10% of the total e-reader market. This growth is being driven by upcoming color models from Rakuten Kobo and reMarkable, with production expected to begin in the first and third quarters. It is worth noting that reMarkable plans to adopt ACeP (possibly for the 12-inch model), further promoting Amazon’s aggressive entry into the color e-reader field in 2025.

The expected growth in color e-reader shipments from 2024 to 2025 highlights the key role of enhanced reading experience in driving structural changes in the market. This trend benefits content publishers by boosting e-book sales. It contributes to the continued expansion of the global e-reader market, which is expected to reach 15 to 20 million units annually by 2025.

Likewise, the electronic shelf label (ESL) market is also transforming due to increased demand from Walmart. E Ink originally planned to phase out three-color ESL production in 2024, but after Walmart adopted four-color ESL, E Ink may accelerate this transition. This transition is expected to begin in the second half of 2024, providing E Ink with the opportunity to promote four-color ESL to other customers. Although the unit price of a four-color ESL is expected to be approximately 10% higher than a three-color ESL, its enhanced specifications justify the investment.

Although it highlighted the challenges of transitioning to color technology during its 2023 earnings call, E Ink remains optimistic about the application of e-paper in various fields, including e-readers, ESL, digital signage and more. With ESL inventory digestion expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024, E Ink is well positioned to take full advantage of emerging opportunities in the market.

With a keen interest in technology, I make it a point to keep myself updated with the latest developments in technology and gadgets. This includes smartphone or tablet devices and even extends to artificial intelligence and self-driving cars, the latter of which is my latest fad. Besides writing, I enjoy watching videos, reading, listening to music, or trying different recipes. Film is another aspect that interests me and I may make a film at some point in the future.
